Pachira Aquatica (MONEY TREE)

A money tree plant is a special type of bonsai tree. The design originated in Taiwan in the 1980s, and was quickly picked up by many other Asian nations. 

Areas with large Asian populations frequently have money tree plants for sale, because they are supposed to bring good luck and fortune. The money tree plant is particularly associated with China, and is often given out at Chinese New Year complete with red banners and other lucky decorations.

The species used for a money tree plant is formally known as Pachira aquatica. It is native to swamp lands in South America. The plant itself is already considered to be fortunate by followers of feng shui, because of its five lobed palmate leaves. A money tree plant with leaves in clusters of seven, another powerful number, is considered to be especially lucky. The leaves of the money tree plant are edible, along with the flowers and nuts that it forms. The lucky trees can often be found in powerful places in the home, because plants and living things are supposed to be good for feng shui.

The story goes that in the 1980s, a Taiwanese truck driver tried making bonsai with multiple trees, and braiding the stems together. The result, the money tree plant, can be found for sale in almost any Asian market worth its salt. The trees are heavily handled while they grow, so that the stems can be braided into a central trunk of three, five, or more stems. The top of the money tree plant is allowed to grow outward normally, so that the lucky leaves can flourish.

If well cared for, a money tree plant can grow to well over six feet (two meters) in height. Even if indifferently cared for, a money tree plant will usually thrive. Low light is preferred, and the plant should be allowed to dry out between waterings. If the leaves start to crinkle or curl, the plant is being over or underwatered.

The succulent Crassula ovata, or Jade Plant, is also sometimes called the money tree plant. It is also native to South America, and extremely tolerant to minimal care. Jade Plant can also thrive at much lower temperatures outdoors, although the fleshy leaves are susceptible to frostbite if the plant is not covered on extremely cold nights.

Allow the soil to dry completely in between waterings and do not spray mist the plant. Under-watered succulents will have 'crinkled' leaves and over-watered ones will start to turn soft and yellow and start to drop. Use a fertilizer specially formulated for cacti/succulents.

Feng shui (literally "wind water") is part of an ancient Chinese philosophy of nature. Feng shui is often identified as a form of geomancy, divination by geographic features, but it is mainly concerned with understanding the relationships between nature and ourselves so that we might live in harmony within our environment.

Feng shui is related to the very sensible notion that living with rather than against nature benefits both humans and our environment. If we surround ourselves with beauty, gentleness, kindness, sympathy, music, and with various expressions of the sweetness of life, we ennoble ourselves as well as our environment.

Alleged masters of feng shui, those who understand the five elements and the two energies such as chi and sha (hard energy, the opposite of chi), are supposed to be able to detect metaphysical energies and give directions for their optimal flow. Feng shui has become a kind of architectural acupuncture: wizards and magi insert themselves into buildings or landscapes and use their metaphysical sensors to detect the flow of good and bad "energy." These masters for hire declare where bathrooms should go, which way doorways should face, where mirrors should hang, which room needs green plants and which one needs red flowers, which direction the head of the bed should face, etc. They decide these things on the basis of their feel for the flow of chi, electromagnetic fields, or whatever other form of energy the client will worry about. (If you and your lover are having trouble in the bedroom, call a feng shui master. You probably need to move a few things around to get the bedroom chi flowing properly. Only a person with special metaphysical sensors, however, can tell what really needs to be done.)
